In its bulletin of February 25, 2026, the Holy See Press Office published the official announcement of the forthcoming Apostolic Journey of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to Spain, which will take place from June 6 to 12, 2026. The statement says that the Holy Father will make this visit “accepting the invitation of the Head of State and of the ecclesiastical authorities of the country”. Everything suggests that he will visit three cities where the Augustinians are present: Madrid, Barcelona and Tenerife.

With this announcement, the Holy See confirms a visit long awaited by the Church in Spain, which is already preparing to welcome the Successor of Peter. Although the detailed programme of the journey will be announced soon, the Dioceses of Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands have already set up the committees that will organize these days.

Joy

On hearing the news, the Prior Provincial of the Augustinian Province of Saint John of Sahagún expressed his joy, highlighting the opportunity that an event like this offers to live communion from the perspective of Augustinian spirituality: «We have received with immense joy the official announcement of Pope Leo XIV’s Apostolic Journey to Spain, from June 6 to 12. The days he spends in our country will be a time of grace for the Church in Spain and for the Augustinian Province of Saint John of Sahagún. From this moment we are praying for the fruits of the journey, and we also hope to celebrate these days as the Augustinian Family, united in faith, prayer and communion with the Pope».

Apostolic Journey

An Apostolic Journey is always an event of special importance for the life of the local Church. Beyond its institutional dimension, the Pope’s presence expresses communion with the particular Churches and strengthens the evangelizing mission in each country.

In Spain, a nation with deep Christian roots and a significant historical presence of consecrated life (including the Order of Saint Augustine), the Holy Father’s visit is an occasion for spiritual renewal, pastoral momentum and public witness of the faith.

In the coming months, the details of the itinerary, the planned meetings and the liturgical celebrations that will mark this Apostolic Journey will be announced.

Likewise, the proposals of the Province of Saint John of Sahagún and of the rest of the Augustinian Family will gradually take shape.

Madrid, Barcelona and Tenerife

Everything suggests that the itinerary will include the cities of Madrid, Barcelona and Tenerife, three places where the Augustinians are present.

In the Archdiocese of Madrid, the Province of Saint John of Sahagún has seven parishes, five schools, three university residences, a centre for theological studies, a centre for university studies and social outreach through platforms such as the Reda Foundation.

In Barcelona, the Province’s presence has a strong social component. The community is made up of four Augustinian friars who serve, on the one hand, the Parish of Saint Augustine in the heart of Barcelona and, on the other, the Parish of Sant Roc in Badalona, home to the Ateneu Sant Roc Foundation, linked to the parish.

In Tenerife, the Augustinian community is made up of four friars who serve two parishes deeply rooted in the cultural life and traditions of Puerto de la Cruz, the town where they live.

Thus, the announced visit of Pope Leo XIV is also shaping up as a providential opportunity to renew, from the charism of Saint Augustine of Hippo, the commitment to a Church that is close, fraternal and outgoing. The Augustinian communities are already preparing to live these days as a time of grace.

Faithful to Saint Augustine’s wish “to have one heart and one soul directed towards God”, the friars, parishes, schools, university residences and social works of the Province of Saint John of Sahagún want to take an active part in this ecclesial event, offering their collaboration and prayer so that the Pope’s visit may bear abundant fruits of faith, unity and hope for the whole Church in Spain.

I know Leo XIV
