town in North Africa, into a home divided between two outlooks: a pagan father, Patricius, and a Christian mother, Monica, whose faith would shape his destiny for ever.<\/p>\n<p>He was not baptised as a child, but thanks to Monica he took his first steps in the faith. That \u201clost year\u201d became a whirlwind of intense friendships, first passions and impulsive decisions: at times he walked towards God; at others, he turned his back on him.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a patron he was able to go to Carthage, where he lived through a period marked by love, fatherhood and an insatiable thirst to understand the mystery of life. He spent almost a decade with the Manichaeans, until meeting Faustus, their great teacher, showed him more emptiness than light. Disillusioned, he came close to scepticism. There he met Bishop Ambrose, whose intelligence and serenity won his mind and his heart, and he heard the witness of simple people who lived their faith radically.<\/p>\n<p>In 386 he read words of Saint Paul that pierced his soul: \u201cPut on the Lord Jesus Christ\u201d (Rom 13:14). At last, the inner night opened to the light.
